RAW SIGNAL is a newspaper that shows its scaffolding. This page is the argument for why — and the spec sheet proving the argument was built, not just argued.
THE FRAMEWORK IS THE MESSAGE
A publication is its structure before it is its sentences. We draw the grid in ink because the grid is doing the work. When you can see the columns, you can see where the editor put things — and where the editor did not. Exposure is accountability.
DECORATION IS A CONFESSION
Every drop shadow is an admission that the thing underneath needed help. We do not need help. The borders are the margins; the rules are the layout; the type is whatever your machine already owned, pushed until it tells the truth.
SIX COLORS IS A WORLD
Paper, ink, highlighter, hazard, cyan, magenta. The press has run on four colors and stock for a century and produced every image that ever mattered. Constraint is not a limitation. Constraint is the style guide with its sleeves rolled up.
INTERACTION IS A CONTACT SPORT
Hover states that whisper are hover states that apologize. Ours invert, slam four pixels, and throw a hard shadow. If you touched it, it moved. If it moved, it meant it. Feedback you can see from across the room is the only kind worth shipping.
THE READER'S TIME IS THE ONLY METRIC
We do not measure engagement. We do not A/B test your attention. We measure one thing: whether you finished. A page that ends is a page that respects you. This is the entire analytics stack.
DEFAULT IS A STARTING POINT, NOT A DESTINATION
System fonts, system dialogs, system colors — we start where the machine starts, because the machine's defaults are the shared reality of every reader. Then we push them past recognition, because a default you never touched is a decision you never made.
THE PAPER IS THE PLATFORM
No feed. No algorithm. No trending tab, no recommendation engine, no infinite anything. There is a front page and there is a last page and the distance between them is exactly one newspaper. We ship it whole or not at all.
THE SYSTEM, DOCUMENTED
Every rule on this site is on this table. There are no other rules. If a style is not listed here, it is a bug, and bugs get fixed in public.
